Compared to lubricating oils, selecting the right lubricating grease is much more complicated.

Based on the basic components of a lubricating grease and their interaction in the lubrication of rolling bearings, a practice-orientated guide to grease selection in rolling bearing lubrication is provided.

Practical issues such as operating temperature range, lubrication methods and compatibility of different lubricating greases are also dealt with. The analysis of new and used lubricating greases is demonstrated using examples.

Module 1: Lubricating greases - the basics
  • Lubricating greases – What makes the difference
  • Typical characteristic values
  • Types of thickeners, properties and areas of application
  • Base oils for lubricating greases – properties and areas of application
  • Additives for lubricating greases
  • Miscibility and compatibility of lubricating greases
Module 2: The lubricating grease in rolling bearings
  • Why most rolling bearings are grease-lubricated
  • How the grease “works” in the rolling bearing
  • Characteristic values of lubricating greases for product selection
  • Guide to grease selection (base oil, thickener, additives)
  • Lubrication process briefly explained (manual, lubricator, lubrication systems)
Module 3: Monitoring new and used lubricating greases
  • Test method for product monitoring of new lubricating greases
  • Test methods for used lubricating greases
  • Test methods for compatibility testing
  • Examples
