The MLA II-exam

A participation in the official MLA II exam is voluntary.

The exam takes place on Friday immediately after the certification course from 9.00 am till 12.00 pm in Brannenburg and is conducted by the ICML.

Please register yourself in time two weeks before the examination date directly at the ICML if you want to take part in the exam.

MLA Level 2 - Certified Oil Analysis - Specialist

Target group

Techical or maintenance staff of factories or plants where their main tasks include different acitivities in relation to oil and grease analysis for machinery condition monitoring. This includes e.g. sampling, sample Management, execution of simple oil Analysis tests on-site as well as administration and evaluation of test results.

What does MLA mean?

The MLA II certification (Machinery Lubricant Analyst - Level II) approves that skilled technical employees in the area of machinery lubrication and there especially in machine condition Monitoring and maintenance are able to perform the following tasks appropriately:

  • Installation of sampling equipment in order to take oil samples repeatedly in a efficient and representative way.
  • Representative oil sampling of typical industrial machines and sample preparation for analysis.
  • Selection of appropriate analysis methods in order to identify and eliminate mistakes in the use of lubricants.
  • Selection of appropriate analysis methods to monitor the quality of the lubricants in use and to avoid unusual wearout of machines.
  • Evaluation of analysis lab results or online systems and implementation of procedures or actions to ensure machine availability and readiness.
  • inspection and proper storage of new oil deliveries.

Usually the oil analysis specialist is in continous contact with the machine and has influence on the selection and condition of the lubricants and hydraulic fluids in use.

A basic understanding about lubrication, wearout, oil Analysis procedures and tribology is presumed.

The certification exam

To become certified, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • Education and/or Experience - Candidates must have 24 months experience in the field of lubricant-analysis-based machinery condition monitoring. The months of experience are based on 16 hours minimum per month of sampling and analysis experience. Hold Level I Machine Lubricant Analyst (MLA) certification OR have a minimum of 960 hours experience and the knowledge base of the MLA I body of knowledge.
  • Training - Candidate must have received 24 hours of documented formal training in oil analysis for machine condition monitoring as outlined in the Body of Knowledge of the MLA II.

  • Examination - Each candidate must successfully pass a written, 100 question multiple choice examination that evaluates the candidate's knowledge of the topic. Candidates have three hours to complete the closed-book examination. A score of 70% is required to pass the examination and achieve certification.
